Untitled #8
Courtney Hoskins (UCB)

Filtered photograph of transparent collage
Liquid crystals and birefringent materials are used extensively in the worlds of science and technology. By bending light waves at selective wavelengths, these materials allow the artist to literally paint and sculpt with light—all possible colors are at her disposal. This is a sculpted landscape collage of birefringent materials (shrink wrap) placed between polarizing filters that has been photographed as a slide. This is a true-color piece that has not been altered digitally.
