Human Cough Meg VanSciver (UCB), Jean Hertzberg (UCB)
Particle image velocimetry This picture shows particle image velocimetry of human-generated aerosol. Velocities ranged from 2 to 28 m/s. Healthy individuals, such as the subject of the image, produce little aerosol during voluntary cough. A mouthful of water was used to seed the flow in this image. Infectious aerosols can be spread into the air when a person coughs or sneezes. The object of this study is to improve our understanding of how infectious diseases spread in indoor environments.
