The Chicken AND the Egg(s) Jim Heath(UCDHSC), Vic Spitzer (UCDHSC)
Sectioned and photographed as for the Visible Human Project
This cross section through an adult chicken was captured by the University of Colorado Center for Human Simulation for Auburn University Department of Poultry Science. The two large, yellow structures to the right are eggs and not to be confused with other yellow which is a dye injected into the air sacs. Arteries, veins and the oral cavity were also injected with high contrast colored material in order to aid identification of these spaces. The photograph, however, was captured with a 2K x 3K camera yielding 100 micron pixel resolution at this field of view (the Visible Human was captured with 2K x 2K photography and a larger field of view—yielding 333 micron pixels for each image.) Like the Visible Human, the chicken was frozen to -80°C. Another improvement over the Visible Human Project is the light blue layer of polymer painted onto the surface of the specimen. This thin layer formed a superior bond to that of the specimen-gelatin used in the Visible Human. The brown area on the periphery is gelatin (the gelatin layer for the Visible Human was dyed blue).
