Cell-Portrait
Marshall Dines (UCDHSC)

Acrylic paint in bubble wrap on canvas
"Cell-Portrait" deconstructs the self-portrait into a pattern of color-filled “cells.” Like cells composing the body, these discrete, membrane-bound cells of color, when assembled together, give rise to something larger. Each is singular in purpose, but through its own pursuit contributes to success of the whole. The process drew on science as well. Syringes were used to inject each three-dimensional cell, albeit in this case with paint. Those that broke or were damaged were left in place, necrotic imperfections of a cell-portrait.
